Adelaide boy wins AXN model comp

Adelaide’s own Adrian Mendo has been named as the winner of the 2010 AXN Australia’s Next Gay Cover Model Competition.
Adrian took out the honours at the Adelaide heat of the competition, held at the Hampshire Hotel last month, which sent him to the Grand Final held on Sunday February 21 at Mardi Gras’ Fair Day in Victoria Park, Camperdown.
Hundreds of people packed the area in front of the stage as host, drag icon Joyce Maynge, took the strong field of seven finalists from across Australia through their paces.
“I really didn’t expect to win,” Mendo told blaze. “There were about four other guys there I thought were really good looking and I expected one of them to win.”
When they called out his name as the winner, Mendo was genuinely taken by surprise.
“I just thought: What? This is unreal!” he laughed.
The search began in December last year with heats being held around Australia, including Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast. The winner of each heat then went on to the Grand Final.
As Australia’s next Gay Cover Model, Mendo will now take part in a professional photo shoot and will feature on the cover of blaze’s national sister publication AXN as well as an exclusive photo spread in the magazine.
Mendo said he was looking forward to the shoot, which will take place in the next few weeks. In the meantime, he’ll be heading back to Sydney for the Mardi Gras Party.
blaze editor Scott McGuinness congratulated Mendo on his win.
“We hope we can feature Adrian on the cover of blaze later in the year, and run a full length interview with him,” McGuinness said. “Watch this space.”
