Taking it off for Spencer Tunick
| 09 March 2010
Thousands of people braved chilly autumn conditions to take part in Spencer Tunick’s nude installation, The Base, at the Sydney Opera House on Monday, March 1.

Part of the Mardi Gras Festival, the installation attracted over 5000 participants.
The models, all of whom gave up their time, were asked to pose in several sets.
“It was a magical moment when 5200 people nuded up and started spilling onto the Opera House forecourt,” said NMG Festival Executive Producer, Danielle Harvey.
“They were so supportive of each other and so brave. One of the setups Spencer asked everyone to do was to kiss or go cheek to cheek – that’s face cheek – with each other. It was beautiful moment seeing two women, two men, and men and women all touching.
I feel we gave people a really special gift for Mardi Gras.”

Yes! I was one of the 5200 who stood naked on the steps of the Opera House.
I found it to be a most cathartic experience...I expected to feel embarrassed by my nakedness but I was not. It was in no way sexual but I found myself rejoicing in the variety of human bodies of all shapes and sizes and the realisation of how essentially we are the same without our clothes...white, black or brindle!
